For a very long time, it was thought that humans had a fixed number of neurons, predetermined at birth. Recent studies have instead shown that in the adult human brain, about 1,400 new neurons are formed every day! The area where this new production occurs most is the hippocampus, which is involved in learning and memory processes, and this happens practically throughout life, with only a minimal decline over the course of life. This means two important things:
- We have the potential to form new brain cells even in adulthood;
- The human brain never stops learning, it only stops with death.
The development of neurodegenerative diseases depends on a progressive neuronal death and a consequent loss of function in the affected brain areas. Numerous studies have shown that at the root of this degenerative process is an inflammatory state sustained by glial cells, immune system cells residing in the brain. Normally, these cells are quiescent, activating only to eliminate various toxins from the brain environment (in particular environmental toxins, neurotoxins, heavy metals, bacterial lipopolysaccharides) causing a temporary inflammation. However, if the inflammation becomes chronic and self-sustaining, a process is triggered that is initially irritating and then neurodegenerative for the neurons. In these cases, we have glial cells active in the inflammatory phase near the damaged neurons.
Statistical projections indicate, for the coming years, a progressive increase in the incidence of this type of disease with alterations in cognitive functions that will evolve into true neurodegenerative diseases.
Psychophysical stress accelerates neurodegeneration. Excessively fast-paced lifestyles, emotional and work-related problems, not respecting the sleep-wake cycle, and inadequate nutrition (gluten, caseins, caffeine, refined sugars, and industrially processed foods...) create and maintain states of neurological inflammation that favor, in predisposed individuals, the onset of cognitive dysfunctions.
